Generational Education

Post-Secondary EducationóCapacity building that results in positive transformation for oneself and one's environment starts with relevant education. In order to meet this standard, the College is upgrading its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Community Development. It takes experience and many different skills to establish and successfully operate community based organizations that can bring about positive changes in low-income communities or in broader policy issues related to social justice. Sojourner-Douglass College aspires to a leadership role in preparing young people to enter this field and providing mid-career education for people on the front lines as community organizers, social change activists, and those leading the process of community change. We are reviewing our current community development degree program, and recommending a series of steps to strengthen them in order to provide the combination of classroom teaching, field experience, and applied research which community change leaders need. Once this overhaul is complete, we intend to conduct an aggressive marketing campaign to recruit community and resident leaders and provide them with a state-of-the-art community development curriculum.

Primary and Secondary Education

Relevant education is equally important for our children on the primary and secondary grade levels. To address this generational need, Sojourner-Douglass College applied for and was recently approved to operate the Inner Harbor East Academy for Young Scholars, a charter school for pre-k through grade 12. The mission of the charter school is to provide a unique learning environment for students that offers an ecological approach. This approach embraces the student, teacher, family and community, and the model incorporates human as well as educational service. Students on the primary and secondary grade levels will be developed to become life-long independent learners, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and effective leaders to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. By strategically linking primary and secondary education to post-secondary models, Sojourner-Douglass College is applying generational solutions to challenges that are also generational in their makeup.
