Practical Nursing at Sojourner-Douglass College

  1. What is the first step that I need to complete to be considered for the nursing program?
    1. The FIRST step that you need to complete is applying to Sojourner-Douglass College. Once you apply for general admission to the College, you will need to take the College placement test in order to assess which courses you will take. If you are transferring credits in, you will need to have your transcripts sent to the Registrar’s office for evaluation.

  2. Which prerequisite courses do I need to take if I am new to College, and am not transferring in courses from another college?
    1. he courses that you will need to take prior to being considered for the Practical Nursing program depend on which level that you test in at on the College Placement test. If you test into remedial courses in English and Math, you will be required to take developmental courses which are geared toward helping you be successful in the Nursing Program.

      The requirements for the Nursing Program are listed below. These courses must be completed with a grade of ‘C” or better before you are considered for acceptance into the program:

      • English Composition
      • College Reading
      • College Math
      • Introduction to Biology or Science for the Health Professions
      • Becoming a Master Student
      • Anatomy and Physiology I & II (Lecture and Lab)
      • Introduction to Computers
      • Introduction to Psychology
      • Orientation to Nursing
      • Dosage Calculations
  3. What grade point average (GPA) must I keep in order to be accepted into the program?
    1. You must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in order to be considered.

  4. If I am a transfer student what do I need to do?
    1. You must first apply to Sojourner-Douglass College and be accepted to the College. You will also need to take the College placement test for evaluation. You will need to have your transcripts sent to the Registrar’s Office for evaluation. ALL science courses need to have been taken WITHIN 7 years of acceptance to the program. If your science courses are older than 7 seven years, you will be required to repeat them and complete them with a grade of ‘C’ or better. Courses that you will need to have completed successfully prior to acceptance into the program are:

  5. How long is the program?
    1. Upon acceptance into the program, and starting your nursing courses, the program is a 3-semester program.

  6. Is there a pre-nursing exam?
    1. Yes, you are required to take the pre-nursing entrance exam as part of your application to the program. You will take this exam during the semester that you are completing your prerequisite requirements prior to coming into the program.

      Currently the exam costs $50.00 which you will be required to pay by way of cash or money order prior to scheduling the exam in the nursing office. The exam itself takes about 3 hours and is administered online. Testing dates are posted in the LPN Program Calendar.

  7. What other requirements must I meet in order to be considered for the Practical Nursing Program?
    1. You will need to fill out an application in the Nursing Office the semester before you plan to start nursing courses. You will also need to submit a 500 word essay discussing why you want to be a nurse. Additionally, you will get recommendations from nursing Instructors in the following courses NUR 100 and NUR 101.

  8. When is the nursing exam given?
    1. You will take the nursing pre-entry exam mid-way through the semester prior to the one when you plan on starting your nursing courses.

  9. What type of Financial Aid does Sojourner-Douglass College offer?
    1. S-DC offers a variety of different financial aid programs to help with the cost of the program. For more information, follow up with the Office of Financial Aid.

  10. Will I have to have an interview?
    1. Yes you will need to schedule an interview with nursing faculty and staff. Interview dates for 2008 can be found in the LPN Program Calendar.

  11. How will I know if I made it into the program?
    1. Acceptance letters are sent after all of the applications are completed. Typically, you will receive your letter approximately 1 month before the date of the start of the nursing program. You will need to complete all of the required health clearances, drug screen, and criminal background check prior to the start of the nursing program.

  12. If I have a criminal record will I be accepted into the program?
    1. Prior instances of criminal behavior (both misdemeanors and felonies) are taken into serious consideration when reviewing the applicant’s qualifications. If your criminal background check is positive for a felony, you will not be considered for the program.

  13. What are the days and hours of the program?
    1. Nursing courses are taught during the day. Nursing clinicals are taught between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and may be scheduled any day of the week around the clinical site availability.
