Practical Nursing at Sojourner-Douglass College

About The Program

The purpose of the Sojourner-Douglass Practical Nursing Certificate Program is to prepare practical nurses who have adequate knowledge, skill, and judgment to provide care under the direction of a registered nurse and a licensed physician. It also serves to expand and enhance the educational and career ladder opportunities in nursing.  Here are a few key points about our program:

  • The Program itself consists of 13 classes taken over three semesters and can be completed in one year.
  • Classes are taught during the day. Nursing Clinicals can be taught on any day of the week between 7 am and 11 pm depending on availability.
  • Typically, students receive their acceptance letter approximately 1 month before the first day of classes. The required health clearances, drug screen, and criminal background check must be completed prior to the start of the nursing program.
  • Cost for the PN program is affordable, competitively priced, and financial aid is available.
  • Student Support Services provides students with academic support in reading, writing, study skills, and mathematics.
  • Drop-In child care services is provided for students’ children between the ages of 2 and 12 years old.
  • Job Placement Services assists students year-round with part and fulltime employment.
  • Minimum requirements for acceptance: High School diploma or GED. International students must have proof of graduation from high school.

Throughout each of the Program’s three semesters, students are required to take comprehensive assessment examinations to ensure preparedness for the NCLEX-PN exam that is required to become a Licensed Nurse. Students are encouraged to take the NCLEX-PN exam within 3 months of completion of the program to increase the probability of passing the exam on the first attempt.
