Sojourner Douglass College welcomes international students. International (foreign)
students are defined as all non United States citizens holding either temporary (B 2) or permanent visas.
The international student must meet the same admissions requirements as other students.
However, an international student residing outside the United States is required to submit an application
for admission at least six months prior to the
semester in which he or she desires to be enrolled.
Additionally, international students must submit an "Affidavit of Financial Support" verifying that
they have sufficient financial resources on their own behalf or through a sponsor. The affidavit must
document the ability of students to support themselves and their families for the duration of their studies
at Sojourner Douglass College.
International students are required to present evidence of proficiency in the English language in
order to understand lectures, keep abreast of college level work, and express themselves in clear and
grammatically correct written and oral English. This requirement may be met through any of the
following methods:
1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), TOEFL is administered in many localities throughout the world. A
"Bulletin of Information" for Candidates and a registration form for the examination are available from the United
States Information Agency offices. A copy of the bulletin may also be requested directly from: TOEFL Box 899
Princeton, N.J. 08540 U.S.A.
2. The Detroit Test of Language Skills and Mathematics, (DTLSM), is administered by the College. Information
regarding these tests may be obtained from Sojourner Douglass College's.
If test results indicate a need for developmental courses in these areas, the student is enrolled into the
Basic Skills Courses. Before registering for each
semester, the Office
of First Year Experaince will assist the student in
planning his schedule according to the placement test results, academic performance, and objectives.
Form I 20 is required of all international students.
Before U.S. Immigration Form I 20 is issued to the
international student residing in the U.S., a tuition
deposit of one half of the cost of the semester is
required. Others residing outside the U.S. must pay one
year's tuition in advance. Additionally, a student in
need of an I 20 Form must pay a non refundable $50.00
fee for application and processing.
